Otter Encounter
Our roving photographer, Kevin Shabram, has an otter encounter like none other. Here is his story and photographs of these amazing otters.

I had a interesting encounter with some otters last week. I was walking
amongst the rocks and pools north of Weston Beach about halfway to the
slot. I came upon an otter lying in a small tide pool. I backed away, and set up my camera for some pictures. As I was photographing this otter I noticed another otter in the water heading for the rocks. It came out of the water for a moment and went back in. It was plainly heading for the other otter, so I backed away again to give it some space. The second otter came up on the rocks again, went over to the first otter and was trying to get her to go back into the water. The first otter would not go and the second otter left and swam away. Eventually, after a lot of scratching, the first otter slipped back into the water and started to feed. I believe the first otter was a female because she had a very scarred and damaged nose.

Carmel River School Bird Outing

Ranger Chuck led a group of 3rd graders from Carmel River School with the help of Point Lobos Docents on a Bird Outing. This was from the Wednesday March 17th outing. Stan Dryden, Sharon Mitchell, Carol Marquart, Phyllis Hilton, Brian Weed and Fred Brown were in this day's group. Many more docents participated on the other three days.
Beautiful day and good bird sightings with a bunch of great kids.
